Pet Hair--Tips For Dog Owners On How To Keep Your House Clean

Shedding Pet Hair
Shedding pet fur is such a nuisance. It sticks to everything: clothes, carpets, furniture. It can seem like an unending process to keep it cleaned up.
So, what's the solution? Don't have a dog? What are you thinking? No dog-lover will ever agree to that!
Life without a dog, to a dog-lover, is:
- No one to greet you at the door with a wagging tail and big "smile" on his face
- No one to follow you eagerly from room to room, wanting to play. (He wins!)
- No one to beg for treats. (He wins!)
- No one to want a walk when you are too tired. (He wins?)
- No one to ask for a ride in the car when you just want to sit down and do nothing. (He wins!)
- No furry-someone to cuddle with on the couch while you're reading a good book? (You both win.)
No, there HAS to be another answer to the pet hair problem.
Surprisingly, it isn't always the long-haired breeds that produce the most. Some of the short haired dogs, such as Labrador Retrievers, have two coats. An outer and an inner coat. This serves as insulation from extreme heat and cold. However, as the seasons shift, the lower coat also does...all over your house.
Shedding is an important part of the natural process for dogs and cats, too. Dogs, especially, can produce enough excess fur that you'd think you could build a whole 'nother dog from it. Really! Shedding, especially for the shorter haired dogs, happens all of the time to a degree and in abundance at the change of the major season. Resource: Why Dogs Shed
Cleaning Pet Hair
There are some methods and products that will help you control the unwanted pet hair in your house.
First, keep your dog groomed. Occasional shampooing (don't overdo it lest you dry out their skin) and frequent brushing, especially in shedding season, will help. Plus, your dog will love the attention. Resource: Caring for Your Dog's Coat
Next, stay on top of the project. If you let your house go for days, the build-up may seem insurmountable. It's not but it'll be a much bigger job.
Vaccuum the house frequently. If there is a lot of fur on the carpets, or it is stubbornly sticking to the carpets, carpet powder does wonders. Resource: Consumer Reports Study on Best Vacuum Cleaners for Pet Hair
Arm & Hammer Pet Fresh Odor Eliminator for carpets with "vacuum booster" is like a magnet. This by far is my #1 choice for getting up pet hair from carpet. Sprinkle it on. Wait up to 30 minutes. Vaccuum it up. The pet hair clings to the powder and pulls it all into the canister. It works great and does remove the pet smells as well.

Three tools that I have found to work well...not perfect, but pretty good, are:
Pet Hair Magnet -- the pet hair magnet works well on carpeted stairs. It takes a lot of elbow-grease, though, and bending over. I prefer to use it just for the creases of the stairs to shorten that part of the process.
Pet Hair Sweeper -- the Pet Hair Sweeper does a very good job on sofas and other fabric-covered furniture. It is disposable but each one lasts quite a while. I've heard that some people have found a way to edge the fur out from inside and get more use out of it. That's up to you if you want to try it!
Libman Precision Angle Broom -- I had my angle broom for the floors in my house but, in desperation, decided to vigorously sweep the stairs and see what would happen. My stairs are navy blue and the white dog-fur from our yellow labs gets thick. Using back and forth strokes, the fur was literally "flying" off the stairs and onto the floor below. Then it was so easy to just vacuum it up! This, by far, is my favorite product, along with the A&H Pet Fresh carpet powder.

Great resources! I love how you broke everything down. Cat owners deal with many of the same hair issues and will be able to take tips from this, too.
It is quit a job to keep the house clean when having a dog in the family so your tips here are very useful. I do not have a dog right now but I miss having a dog in the family in all of the situations you have listed here. Although I have a clean house now, I think I prefer some dog hair here and there. The pet hair magnet looks very useful!
Thanks for sharing these tips,
Tina
Carpet powder?? Must look into immediately. With a black-and-white Springer, there's no camouflaging the hair!
Good information here. I am allergic to dog and cat hair, so I chose a Miniature Schnauzer (I wrote a Hub about her) so I don't have a problem with her shedding. It is a problem, I know for a lot of people.
Ummm...could you just come to my house and SHOW me how to clean up all the hair from my 2 Great Danes?? lol
Voted up!
Great article - I have two terrier types who fortunately shed practically not at all - my daughter however has four heavy shedders, and every cleaning device known to man - the best is the furminator, of which there are many varieties - it really does get rid of masses of loose hair before it can reach the floor, cushions, etc. - unfortunately, you need to devote lots of time to its use - but then who could possibly contemplate life without dogs, shedders or not.
Thanks Sinea for this great hub. I have two black labs and it's so hard to keep up with all the hair. They shed differently but they both shed a lot. I am intrigued by the products you speak of, especially the Pet Hair Magnet and the Arm and Hammer carpet cleaner. Not sure if my vacuum has a booster?? Not sure what that means? Anyway, this is so helpful for me.
I can back that up -- after you replied to a comment I left about the carpet powder, I picked some up and used it before my fiance got home. He came up the stairs and had the most confused look on his face...he must have thought he was in the wrong apartment! Now we're obsessed with it and use it every few days. Pet hair aside, now that it's windows-closed time in the midwest, it's a great way to keep the house smelling nice and fresh! Thanks for the great tip!!
And another great tip I get odd looks for (that doesn't have much to do with pet hair, exactly, but definitely pets) is, when my dog gets overly excited and pees on the carpet, stepping on a disposable diaper on top of the mess. It sucks everything out of the carpet like magic!
We have a half Lab and half German Shorthair. He sheds terrible the worst dog we ever had for that. Our Springer hardly ever sheds. We get him groom every 6 months.
Rubber gloves work good to get hair off furniture.
I also love the angle broom for pet hair.
This is interesting - I hadn't thought of the powder as a way to pick up fur. Voted up.

I have a Great Pyrenees and when he isn't shedding...it just seems to fall out in other ways. Oddly enough...before clicking onto Hubpages right now...I was scraping fur off the couch. Rubber gloves DOES work wonderfully and I keep forgetting to but them...until I start scrapping hair and I'm all..."I need rubber gloves."
Great ideas and very timely (for me at least!)

This is a great hub! I have some fleece jackets that, well, I have just given up on the fur-free thing. Now, I look like I have a sweater fleece from my lab, but I've since stopped caring. I'd rather have the dog driving me crazy. Hehe. Voted up. Great tips that I will have to try.
As a dog owner, I found this hub very useful and informative.
I have a husky and a German Shepherd. I vacuum several times a day and I still can't keep up with the fur!
Voted up and useful.
Have never heard of a pet hair magnet, till now. Thanks for the info that I have more choices. I paid for a Kirby Sentria Vacuum that does the job except for the nooks and crannies.
