67Finding the Right Name for Your Dog
When you first get a dog, you want just the right name for him. Should he have a tough "he-man" name like Rocky or Spike? Or should she have a "little ball of fluff" name like Mitsy or Daisy? Whatever you select, it is who your dog will be for the rest of its life.
Owners with a sense of humor may want to try something more daring. How about "Bacon" for a girl-dog. Yes, a young newly-wed was asked by her husband what to name their gorgeous, black English lab puppy and, being a comic, her first words were "Bacon" and the name stuck! (She was eating bacon at the time!)
Funny thing with dogs, though. They don't much care what their name is. As long as you say it with a loving tone, a smile, a treat and a tummy rub, they'll answer to most anything--and love you for it!
Presidential Dogs
Most of the US Presidents had dogs. In the course of their lives, some owned many. Amongst the most famous presidents, here are some of their dogs' names:
George Washington had an abundance of foxhounds. Names included Captain, Mospey, Tipler, Chloe, Searcher and Vulcan.
Abraham Lincoln had “Fido” and “Jip”.
Franklin D Roosevelt had a dog named "Fala".
John F Kennedy a Welch Terrier named Charlie and an Irish Cocker Spaniel named Shannan. He also received a dog as a gift from the Premier of Russia. The dog was named Pushinka and was related to the first dog kosmonat.
Lyndon B. Johnson had two Beagles. One named “Him” and one named “Her”. Gotta love it! (Incidentally, LBJ took a lot of flack for lifting one of the dogs, Him, by his ears. It hit the news in a big way and drew lots of criticism.)
Ronald Reagan owned “Lucky” and “Cavalier”
George HW Bush dog was “Millie” and her two pups, “Spot” and “Ranger”.
Bill Clinton had a chocolate lab named “Buddy”

We ended up being very boring and calling our English Springer Spaniel Toby, short for Tobemory the womble from a British TV programme. Strangely enough, he is quite like his TV character namesake. Loveable and very easy going. My husband wanted to call him Zowie, of Bowie fame but there was no way I was going to shout that in the middle of the local field.
Toby is a noble name!
I had Staffies called Sophie and Cosmo, and a Bull Terrier cross called Dolly, she was the sort of dog people used to cross the street when they saw us coming - she looked so mean, but she was a real sweetie, I miss her heaps. Now I have Whippets - Benny and Dotty (she was adopted by us aged 5 and came with this name)
Dogs are the best, aren't they? Staffie? That's a breed I don't think I am familiar with. My childhood dogs, Duke, Duchess and Princess were all boxers. I thought they were beautiful but other people were a little afraid of them. Thanks for the help. I'll be adding their names to this hub later today.
One lady in my rescue group has a dog named Riot (a crazed border collie) I loved that! My childhood dog was named Buttons and it always embarassed my dad to call her in, when the other neighborhood men were calling in their "Thors" and "Killers"!

My female is Magz and my male is Bruce. My uncle always had cool names for his dogs. One that I will always remember was for his female boxer her name was Trixie.

When writing about my dog--a six-year-old mini Schnauzer--I use her pseudonym, Puppy Girl, which is one of the terms of endearment I called her when she was little, and it stuck around. I also called her Sugar Baby and Baby Sister then and sometimes still do.
However, I researched the breed before getting her and decided to give her a female German name since that's where Schauzers originated. She has a great name, even a middle name (a tradition in the Deep South, USA) plus my last name tacke on at the end, so she has a mouthful of names!
When she was a small puppy and did something naughty, I reacted just as I did when my human children were small and they did something naughty: I'd use all three of her formal names to call her. Isn't that silly?
Now, when it's just the two of us here together, I talk to her and mainly use her first name. But those terms of endearment are still important, and I use one of them when she's getting her first-thing-when-she-wakes-up tummy tickle.
Aren't dogs wonderful? I didn't know that until I was 61 and got my very first pet. This adorable little fur-girl came into my life and changed it forever. I feel so lucky. Jaye

We adopted 2 adult labs. One came without a name so we called her Lexi. Troy came named already.
